UPDATE (September 17, 2024):
The Allen County Coroner’s Office has identified a man shot and killed by Fort Wayne police on Monday.
Saying in a release the man killed was 59-year-old Samuel Sterling Caston of Fort Wayne. His death has been ruled a homicide by police-action shooting, marking the 32nd homicide in Allen County so far this year.

On Monday, September 16, 2024, the Allen County Coroner’s Office was notified of a police-action shooting, in the 400 Block of East Leith Street, in Fort Wayne. Three Rivers Ambulance Authority responded and pronounced death at the scene. The individual has been positively identified as Samuel Sterling Caston, 59, male, Black, from Fort Wayne.
An autopsy has been completed and notification has been made to the legal next of kin. The Cause of Death is Gunshot Wounds of Torso and the Manner of Death is Homicide-Police Action Shooting. Samuel Sterling Caston is the 32nd Homicide for Allen County in 2024. The incident remains under investigation by the Fort Wayne Police Department, the Indiana State Police, the Allen County Prosecutor’s Office and the Allen County Coroner’s Office.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – The FWPD says police officers shot and killed a man after a domestic dispute and a police chase Monday afternoon.
The suspect was accused of hitting his wife and pulling a gun on her off Hessen Cassel Road.
Police say he also intentionally crashed into an FWPD vehicle before driving away and that he shot at police when his car stopped. The FWPD says officers returned fire, killing him.
No names have been released.
The FWPD released the following:
Fort Wayne Police Department Officers returned fire after a vehicle pursuit and an adult male suspect shot at police. The FWPD was dispatched to the block of 5900 Hessen Cassel Rd. after a caller told dispatch that a man hit his wife and pulled a gun on her. Officers located the suspect vehicle while en route to the scene. The suspect vehicle intentionally crashed into the police car, then fled. Officers pursued the vehicle until the vehicle stopped in an alley, just south of 400 E. Leith St. where the suspect opened fire on officers, hitting a police car. Officers returned fire, striking the suspect. The suspect was rendered aid, but succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The suspect’s gun was recovered in the suspect’s vehicle. There were no injuries to the public or officers.
This incident remains under investigation by the Fort Wayne Police Department, Allen County Prosecutor’s Office, Allen County Coroner’s Office, and the Indiana State Police will conduct an independent investigation. As is standard protocol, the officers involved will be placed on administrative leave.
