SULPHUR SPRINGS, Ind. (ADAMS) – An 82-year-old man has been killed in a small plane crash in Henry County. The sheriff’s office says the plane crashed around 2 p.m. Tuesday on a private landing strip behind Roberts Pipeline, Incorporated just east of Sulphur Springs. The man has been identified as David Province of Middletown. The crash will be investigated by Indiana State Police (ISP).
ISP released the following:
The Indiana State Police is assisting the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) with investigating an airplane crash near Sulpher Springs. The incident occurred near US 36 and County Road 200 W on a private airfield in Henry County.
At approximately 2:00 p.m., Henry County Dispatch received 911 calls reporting a small plane had crashed near Robert’s Airfield. Troopers from the Pendleton District, Henry County Sheriff’s deputies, and first responders arrived at the crash to discover a blue 1975 Stewart Bowers Flybaby that had crashed into a field north of the private runway.
Firefighters and medical personnel located the pilot and attempted to render medical aid. The pilot was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Henry County Coroner. The Coroner identified the pilot as David Michael Province, 82, of Middletown, Indiana. Mr. Province’s family has been notified.
A preliminary investigation by Sergeant Brian Thomas revealed that the crash happened sometime during takeoff. Province was the only occupant of the plane and there were no other injuries resulting from this crash.
The crash scene and investigation have been turned over to the Federal Aviation Administration. The Indiana State Police will continue to assist the FAA, however, any determinations made relating to the cause of the crash will be released by their agency concluding a thorough investigation.
The Indiana State Police was assisted by the Federal Aviation Administration, Henry County Sheriff’s, Henry County Coroner, New Castle EMS, Jefferson Township Volunteer Fire Department, and Prairie Township Volunteer Fire Department.
