FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – For a second time in as many days, the Fort Wayne Police Department is reporting that one of their officers was involved in a shooting.
The FWPD says that officers were initially called to the Autumn Woods Apartments, on the 2000 block of Chartwell Drive, for a report of a disabled vehicle. When an officer was assisting the motorist the department says someone uninvolved in the situation began firing a gun.
(See statement below)
According to the FWPD, the officer fired back and hit one suspect, injuring him. He was listed as having life-threatening injuries.
No one else was injured.
The officer who fired is on administrative leave per protocol while the incident is under investigation.
On Tuesday, an FWPD officer shot and killed a man who failed to return to custody in DeKalb County off the PFW campus.
Police said he was armed and didn’t respond to commands.
The Fort Wayne chapter of the NAACP says they will address the incidents in a press conference Thursday.
FWPD release for the Chartwell Drive officer-involved shooting:
All information is preliminary and subject to change during the course of the investigation.
The Fort Wayne Police Department responded to a call of a disabled vehicle in the area of 2000 Chartwell Dr. today at roughly 1:13pm. The officer was assisting the disabled vehicle motorist when an uninvolved subject began to fire his gun rapidly. There are inconsistent reports of who the gunman was shooting at, or whether there was another subject shooting back at the gunman. The officer, witnessing the shooting, engaged the gunman, striking him. The gunman was rendered aid, then transported to a local hospital in non-life threatening condition. The adult male suspect has been downgraded to life threatening condition by medical staff. The possible other gunman has not been located at this time. There were no injuries to any bystanders or the officer.
Detectives are speaking to witnesses, attempting to locate surveillance video, and will review body camera and car camera video during the course of the investigation. The officer will be placed on administrative leave, as is standard protocol and policy. This incident remains under investigation by the FWPD Internal Affairs Division, the Prosecutor’s Office, and the Indiana State Police will conduct an independent investigation.
