FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – The Fort Wayne Police Department says no one was hurt in a standoff yesterday morning at the Canterbury Green Apartments. A text message to police sent officers to the apartment complex on the 2800 block of Northgate Boulevard just after 4:30 a.m.
That led to an hours-long standoff and the arrest of a man wanted on a felony warrant.
A woman sent that text saying that there was a domestic dispute with a man identified as 26-year-old Tavon Malik Underwood.
He was allegedly holding a woman and a child who were able to eventually get out safely
Underwood initially refused to come out but other units were paged to the scene and he eventually was apprehended.
The Fort Wayne Police Department released the following:
A female reported a domestic dispute between her and a male suspect in the early morning hours of Monday, June 3, 2024, via text messaging to 911. Dispatch and officers worked to obtain the exact location of the female who was requesting police assistance inside an apartment in the 2800 block of Northgate Blvd. The correct apartment was located, and the female was able to safely exit with a child. Officers determined the female had been held inside the apartment against her will by the male suspect who was identified as 26-year-old Tavon Malik Underwood.
Officers were able to confirm Underwood was still inside the apartment along with other adults. Underwood also had an outstanding felony arrest warrant from an unrelated criminal investigation. Officers were able to get the other adults out of the apartment without incident, but Underwood remained inside. Due to Underwood failing to comply with commands to exit the apartment, Fort Wayne Police Department’s Emergency Services Team, Crisis Response Team, and Air Support Unit responded to assist. Shortly after the arrival of the additional support units, Underwood was taken into custody without incident at approximately 7:35am.
Underwood was arrested for his active warrant relating to Violation of Hope Probation / Possession of a Narcotic Drug, and a new criminal charge of Level 6 Felony Criminal Confinement.
Suspect Arrested: Tavon Malik Underwood, 26 years of age. Preliminary New Charge: Level 6 Felony Criminal Confinement
