FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – A 20-year-old man is charged with three counts of attempted murder and one count of criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon for firing shots inside a Kroger store in Allen County.
It happened in the 6300 block of East State Boulevard just before 6:15 p.m. Thursday and he fled the scene before police arrived. They tracked down the suspect, Richard Klaff, Jr., and booked him into the Allen County Jail early this morning.
The Georgetown Kroger will be closed on Friday (May 24, 2024).
Initially, the FWPD released the following:
On Thursday May 23rd, 2024 around 6:14pm the Fort Wayne Police Department started to receive multiple 911 calls regarding a male white shooting inside the Kroger store at 6310 E. State Blvd. Officers from several police agencies responded to assist. Upon arrival officers learned that the suspect had fled the scene. Officers then searched the store for possible victims or additional shooters. No victims were located in this incident. Officers did locate several casings inside the store.
While officers were talking to witnesses, a male matching the description of the shooter was located in the area. Officers have taken the adult male into custody and do not believe there is any other shooters or threat to the community. Detectives and Crime Scene Technicians are on scene to collect evidence and gather witness statements.
Following an arrest, police released the following:
On 5/23/2024 at 1840 hours, the suspect in the Kroger shooting at 6310 E. State Blvd was apprehended without incident. He was identified as 20-year-old Richard Klaff, Jr. He is currently located at the Allen County Jail. Klaff was preliminarily arrested on three counts of Attempted Murder and one count of Criminal Recklessness with a Deadly Weapon. No one was hurt in the incident and there is no threat to the public. The Fort Wayne Homicide Unit conducted the criminal investigation and was assisted by the Allen County Prosecutors Office. The case is still active and ongoing at this time.
