DEKALB CO., Ind. (ADAMS) – The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office says the sole occupant of a plane that crashed near Country Heritage Winery suffered injuries but should recover.
It happened Tuesday around 5:30 p.m. in a field on CR 68. The pilot said the sun was bright when he was trying to land and the wing of the plane hit a tree – forcing the plane to the ground.
The pilot was taken to the hospital for his injuries. The plane is a total loss.
The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office released the following:
The On 2/20/2024, at around 5:34 pm, DeKalb Central Communications informed the DeKalb County
Sheriff’s Office of an airplane that had crashed in a field in the 100 Block of County Road 68. Deputies
from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office and Fire Personnel from the LaOtto Fire Department located
the wreckage in a field just northwest of the intersection of State Road 3 and County Road 68. Upon
speaking with the pilot/sole occupant of the plane, Deputies were told that he was attempting to
land in the field and that the sun was in his eyes. The pilot stated that he was unable to see a tree
that was in the way and struck it with the wing of the plane causing the plane to strike the ground
with the nose of the plane. The pilot sustained a laceration to the face, and a bruised leg and arm.
The plane was a total loss. The pilot refused treatment at the scene but was transported to Parkview
Regional Medical Center by family for treatment for his injuries.
