FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – You may be able to take your drink with you while walking around downtown Fort Wayne in the future.
Following the passing of a new law, Indiana cities can designate their own Designated Outdoor Refreshment Areas (DORAs).
The areas allow patrons to walk freely with an alcoholic beverage. The law defines the spaces as clearly defined outdoor spaces established by local leaders.
Making a DORA section in downtown Fort Wayne was discussed at Tuesday’s City Council meeting. An ordinance was introduced that would allow drinks outside from several establishments including JK O’Donnells, Copper Spoon, Pint & Slice, and more.

Inside Indiana Business reported in August that like neighboring states, local leaders can set up these areas under specific guidelines.
For example, a DORA cannot be within 200 feet of a church or school unless a representative consents. As well, patrons can only carry up to two open drinks at a time of sizes no more than 10 to 16 ounces depending on the type of drink.
The DORA ordinance for Fort Wayne would have to be cleared by the Indiana Alcohol and Tobacco Commission.
