GRANT CO., Ind. (ADAMS) – A recent investigation into a stolen social security number is prompting the Grant County Sheriff to put out the message that these are crimes and citizens should report them to law enforcement.
In this recent case, police say the social security number of a Grant County resident was used to get a job in Wisconsin. After a multi-agency investigation, Celsa Banegas-Maldonado was arrested for misappropriating personal identifying materials in Wisconsin.
Despite some instances of identity theft not resulting in an arrest, the sheriff says the law enforcement and investigators do work diligently to bring justice in these cases.
The Grant County Sheriff’s Office released the following:
On November 17th, 2023, a fraud report was taken by the Grant County Sheriff’s Office regarding the theft and use of a social security number from a Grant County resident. During the investigation it was determined the social security number had been used in the State of Wisconsin for employment purposes.
Through a cooperative effort with the Grant County Prosecutor’s Investigator, State of Indiana Workforce Development, Social Security Administration Special Agent, and the Shorewood Hills Police in Shorewood Hills, Wisconsin, an arrest has been made.
Celsa Banegas-Maldonado has been arrested and charged with misappropriating personal identifying materials in Wisconsin. She is currently in the Dane County Jail, where in addition to that charge, she is being held on an outstanding federal Administrative Warrant of removal from the United States.
Sheriff Garcia has stated that Scams, Identity Theft as other crimes concern him, and his TEAM is committed to investigating these criminal cases cooperating with all other Law Enforcement, Governmental or Private agencies diligently seeking the truth. We understand that not all cases end in an arrest, however, we will put in the work to identify individuals committing these crimes and make arrests when factual evidence exists.
