FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – The Rescue Mission is shedding light on poverty, food insecurity, and homelessness in Northeast Indiana during National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week.
This annual event unites local volunteers and organizations nationwide to spotlight the economic, social, environmental, and personal challenges faced by many residents in our community. Throughout the week, participants engage in community service and educational, fundraising, and advocacy initiatives to tackle these crucial issues.
Representatives released the following:
The Rescue Mission is currently assisting more than three times the usual number of individuals and families. They estimate that over 3,000 Northeast Indiana residents experience homelessness and are themselves serving more than 2,100 unique individuals annually. According to Pastor Thomas McArthur, President and CEO of The Rescue Mission, “Hunger often precedes homelessness because when people must choose between paying their bills or buying food, they typically opt for bills.”
Data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and U.S. Census Bureau indicates that over 100,000 residents in Northeast Indiana struggle with food insecurity. McArthur emphasizes, “Hunger and homelessness are troubling issues that affect many members of our community. Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week provides us with an opportunity to confront these challenges head-on, garner public support, and advocate for solutions.”
