The person struck and killed by a train in DeKalb County has been identified. The coroner identified the victim as a 12-year-old boy from Altona, Indiana.

On November 3, 2023 the identity of the deceased from Thursday’s train vs pedestrian accident, was
confirmed and next of kin was notified. The deceased has been identified to be 12 year old, Richard Buchtel, from
Altona, IN. No further information is available.

DEKALB CO., Ind. (ADAMS) – The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office says that a train struck and killed a person near the 4700 block of County Road 3 in Garrett on Thursday.
Deputies were sent to the CSX tracks in near the 4700 block of County Road 3 in Garrett at 3:26 a.m. on a report of a pedestrian struck by a train.
Deputies confirmed an individual was fatally struck by a passing train. They were pronounced dead at the scene.
No further details were released. The incident is currently under investigation, the sheriff’s department said.

remains under investigation, and further details will be released when they become available.
