NEW HAVEN, Ind. (ADAMS) – The Allen County Sheriff’s Department says that an hours-long standoff in a vehicle in New Haven led to the arrest of a Michigan man on an outstanding warrant.
He was initially approached around 3:38 a.m. at Gar Creek Road and N. Roussey Road. Police say someone had reported the vehicle as suspicious.
After giving his ID to police, they were made aware that he had an active warrant for his arrest. Police say that he then barricaded himself in the car and ignored commands. Police say at one point he fired a weapon.
Officials say that it took ten hours but the man eventually exited the car and was taken into custody.
The Allen County Sheriff’s Department released the following:
On February 19, 2023 at approximately 3:38 A.M., officers with the Allen County Sheriff’s Department responded to the area of Gar Creek Road and N. Roussey Road, on the report of a suspicious occupied vehicle at the intersection.
Officers arrived and located a vehicle with one male suspect. The male provided his identification and it was found that he had an active warrant. Officers ordered the suspect to exit the vehicle and he refused to do so. The male suspect said he had a weapon and began making threatening statements. Officers attempted to call the suspect out of the vehicle but he continued to ignore lawful commands. The suspect fired one round from a gun, out of the driver’s side window. The Allen County SWAT Team and Crisis Negotiation Team were called to the scene.
After nearly 10 hours with the suspect in his locked vehicle, continuously refusing commands, he was successfully negotiated out of the vehicle and peacefully surrendered.
The suspect was transported to Allen County Lockup and he is being held on a Parole warrant from the state of Michigan. He is also being charged with Criminal Recklessness with a deadly weapon and Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
The Sheriff’s Department was assisted by the Fort Wayne Police Department, New Haven Police Department, Woodburn Police Department and East Central Fire Territory during the investigation.
